2016 Lamborghini Huracán Superleggera Spy Shots

One of our most cherished cars of the modern era, the Gallardo Superleggera, looks set to receive a successor based on Lamborghini’s latest Huracán supercar. Although the car in these latest spy shots looks like your standard Huracán LP 610-4, our photographer tells us that the car is much louder than stock and if you look closely it features a new exhaust system with two high-mounted tailpipes. The standard quad-pipe arrangement lower in the bumper are dummy units used to fool onlookers.

This higher mounting for the tailpipes is similar to what you see on the Huracán LP 620-2 Super Trofeo race car, suggesting that this is a more hardcore version of the Huracán in testing. Lamborghini has just launched a new Aventador variant badged a Superveloce, but this is a designation the Italian marque uses for itshigh-end models. That’s why it’s likely this hardcore Huracán will be badged something like Superleggera.

The original Gallardo Superleggera was presented at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show and quickly garnered a reputation not only for its primal, track-honed feel but also for the predictable and intuitive way it reacted to inputs to the steering wheel and gas pedal, which made it easy to live with off the track. Superleggera is Italian for “super light”, so any new Superleggera version of the Huracán will have to feature some weight saving mods such as a stripped-out cabin and increased use of carbon fiber.

Other potential upgrades could include a slight bump in power, perhaps with the final figure matching the 611 horsepower (620 hp in metric figures) of the Huracán LP 620-2 Super Trofeo racer. The standard Huracán LP 610-4 comes with 601 hp. Tweaks to the suspension, steering and transmission are all possible as well.

By increasing the performance of the Huracán, Lamborghini will be able to ensure that its entry-level supercar will be able to keep up with newer rivals such as the Ferrari 488 GTB and McLaren 675LT. However, we wouldn't expect to see any new Huracán variant until 2016—at the earliest. This would be in keeping with the automaker's promise to introduce at least one new model every year.
